What are Modal Verbs?

Modal verbs are a group of auxiliary verbs in English that express abilities, permissions, possibilities, probabilities, and duties. Some common modal verbs include can, may, must, should, and would.

Types of Modal Verbs

  • Ability: Can, could, may, might, be able to
  • Permission: May, can, could
  • Probability: Might, could, may, might, will, shall
  • Necessity: Must, have to, need to
  • Advice: Should, ought to, had better
  • Offer: Would, could, can

Example

Question: If you are planning to travel to a foreign country, what modal verb should you use?

Answer: You should use "should" because it expresses advice.
