English Grammar Basics
Grammar is the set of rules that governs the structure of sentences in a language. In English, grammar rules help ensure that sentences are clear, accurate, and easy to understand. Here are some fundamental grammar concepts:
Nouns and Verbs
- Nouns are words for people, places, things, or ideas. Examples: "cat", "Paris", "love".
- Verbs are words that show action or state of being. Examples: "run", "is", "hate".
Sentences
A sentence usually consists of a subject and a predicate.
- Subject: The person or thing doing or being something. Example: "The cat sleeps."
- Predicate: The part of the sentence that contains the verb and tells what the subject is or does. Example: "sleeps."
Articles
- A and an are used before singular nouns that begin with a consonant sound.
- The is used before specific or particular nouns.
Prepositions
Prepositions are used to show relationships between nouns and pronouns in sentences. Examples: "in", "on", "under".
Tenses
- Present Tense: Describes actions happening now. Example: "I am reading."
- Past Tense: Describes actions that have happened. Example: "I read."
- Future Tense: Describes actions that will happen. Example: "I will read."
