Example Challenge
Solve for x: (x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0)
Solution
To solve this quadratic equation, we can use the quadratic formula:
[ x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a} ]
For our equation, (a = 1), (b = -5), and (c = 6). Plugging these values into the formula, we get:
[ x = \frac{-(-5) \pm \sqrt{(-5)^2 - 4(1)(6)}}{2(1)} ]
[ x = \frac{5 \pm \sqrt{25 - 24}}{2} ]
[ x = \frac{5 \pm \sqrt{1}}{2} ]
[ x = \frac{5 \pm 1}{2} ]
This gives us two solutions:
[ x = \frac{5 + 1}{2} = 3 ] [ x = \frac{5 - 1}{2} = 2 ]
So, the solutions to the equation are (x = 3) and (x = 2).
