Parts of Speech

Nouns

  • Common Nouns: A common noun is a general name for a person, place, thing, or idea. (e.g. dog, city, book)
  • Proper Nouns: A proper noun is the specific name of a person, place, or thing. (e.g. New York, Shakespeare)

Verbs

  • Action Verbs: These verbs describe actions or states of being. (e.g. run, jump, eat)
  • Stative Verbs: These verbs describe a state or condition. (e.g. be, have, seem)

Adjectives

  • Descriptive Adjectives: These adjectives describe or modify nouns. (e.g. happy, beautiful, tall)

Adverbs

Exercises

Exercise 1: Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the verbs in parentheses.

I am [am/is/are] (eat) lunch right now. I [eat] (finish) it in ten minutes.
