Grammar Examples

Here are some examples of grammar in English:

Nouns

  • Common Nouns are general names of people, places, or things.
    • The cat sat on the mat.
  • Proper Nouns are specific names for people, places, or things.
    • My name is John.
    • We visited Paris last year.

Verbs

  • Actions verbs show what someone or something is doing.
    • She reads books every day.
  • State verbs describe a condition or state of being.
    • The weather is sunny today.

Adjectives

  • Adjectives describe or modify nouns.
    • The red car is fast.
  • Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
    • She runs quickly.

Sentences

  • A simple sentence has one subject and one verb.
    • The dog barks.
  • A compound sentence has at least two independent clauses.
    • The sun is shining, and the birds are singing.

Grammar Rules

  • Subject-Verb Agreement

    • The subject and verb must agree in number.
      • Correct: They are happy.
      • Incorrect: They are is happy.
  • Pronoun-Antecedent Agreement

    • The pronoun must agree with its antecedent in number and gender.
      • Correct: He runs fast.
      • Incorrect: She runs fast.
