  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

Prevention

The best way to prevent the flu is to get vaccinated each year. Other prevention strategies include:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs.

Treatment

If you have the flu, antiviral drugs can be used to treat it. These drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. They can also prevent serious complications. It is important to start taking these drugs within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.
